The Yolgnu People of Ramingining

bird“Twelve Canoes” is an internet response to the success of the 2006 movie “Ten Canoes” directed by Rolf de Heer and presented by the Yolgnu People of Ramingining.

Ramingining is in Australia’s Northern Territory on the Gove Peninsula. It is about 500 km east of Darwin on the edge of the Arafura Swamp in Central Arnhem Land. Djambarrpuyngu is the main language spoken there. Before European settlement Australia was a multi-cultural land populated by more than 500 Aboriginal nations. Yolgnu were among them.
