Australia/New Zealand Concerns

"With Courage Let Us All Combine"The human endeavour in New Zealand and Australia, as in other lands, has had its moments of transcendent beauty, life-giving courage and fraternal decency. Our South Lands have also revealed their bleaker human choices - selfishness and occasional heartlessness.

Many of our myths point to an egalitarianism forged in survival, a down-to-earth-ness born of necessity, and a sense of humour grounded in authenticity.

From dissension, envy, hate, And corruption guard our State, Make our country good and great, God defend New Zealand.

From the national anthem of New Zealand

For those who've come across the seas We've boundless plains to share; With courage let us all combine To advance Australia fair.

From the national anthem of Australia

The religious traditions in New Zealand and Australia call their followers to live compassionately. Among them can be heard the words of Jesus: “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10)

We are called by God to be the stewards of creation, to protect the land and enhance the dignity of all its people.

- Catholic Bishops of New Zealand, Creating New Hearts, 1995

If ours is to become a society in which the expression common wealth attains its full meaning … Australians must place less value on self-centred individualism and more on the individual’s acceptance of responsibility for others in the spirit of solidarity.

- Catholic Bishops of Australia, Common Wealth and Common Good, 1991
