Seeking Asylum

How the federal government reacts to the needs of asylum seekers has often been a contentious issue in Australian politics. The policies of the previous Howard government garnered a great deal of international attention and sent a very strong message as to how asylum seekers would be treated upon arrival in Australia.

Many hoped the election of Kevin Rudd would radically change the way in which Australia treated those most vulnerable, who come to its shores in desperate search for protections and safety.  

With mounting pressure on the Rudd government to take a ‘hard line’ on asylum seekers, and the governments’ own ‘tough rhetoric’, the Redemptorists would like to offer you a reflection based on Catholic social teaching.
