Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Our Lady has always been at the heart of Redemptorist life. Redemptorists have traditionally understood that to have the Jesus story is to have Mary’s story. They have always understood that if Jesus and his modern day disciples are gathered, then the mother of Jesus is also there in the communion of saints.
From the end of the nineteenth century, and at the request of Pope Pius IX, Redemptorists have promoted devotion to Mary under the title of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. This title is attached to a quite old icon now enshrined in the Redemptorist Church of St Alphonsus, on the Via Merulana in Rome, Italy.
If you visit the international shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rome, you will not find people lining up to touch the picture. Nor will you find that happening at the gigantic shrine in her honour at Baclaran, Manila in the Philippines, or the warm Novena Church on Thomson Road in Singapore. At these latter shrines, thousands upon thousands come each week, but they come as a community to pray, not as individuals to touch.
Here at the Redemptorists Monastery in Perth we hold Novenas to Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Saturdays at 4 30 PM. You are most welcome to attend this novena, and join this prayer community.
