O God of Loveliness: The Poetry of St Alphonsus

O God of Loveliness: The Poetry of St AlphonsusSt Alphonsus Liguori is known by most as a renowned moral theologian, Doctor of the Church and founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists. His care for those on the margins of society and church can still be seen today in the charism and works of the Redemptorists, and their partners in mission. But did you know St Alphonsus Liguori was also an artist, poet and musician?

St Alphonsus saw in art a transcendent means for people to grow in faith and love of God. The heart of his artistic expression lied in his theological belief that God meets people where they are, not where we presume they should be. This led St Alphonsus to write in the common, popular folk style of the people he journeyed with.

His art endures and continues to be a source of meditation for us today. Fr Patrick Corbett CSsR has recently released O God of Loveliness: The Poetry of St Alphonsus. The full coloured book contains fresh English translations of his poems, together with the original Italian texts, paintings and other works of art.
