5 Redemptorists ordained to the priesthood

It is with great joy and a humble heart that we are able to introduce you to five newly ordained Redemptorist priests. Doan Nguyen, Timo, Son Nguyen, Vinsensius Lolo and Mark Chia were ordained to the priesthood on Saturday November 24 at St Paschal's Chapel in Box Hill. The five men were fortunate to be ordained by a confrere and mentor, Bishop Paul Bird CSsR.

The day became a celebration, thanking God of the dedication and accomplishment achieved by these five men, and those who supported them on their journey. In the midst of family and friends from around the world, those in attendance were able to bear witness to these men being intrusted with the sacred duty to serve their community. As Bishop Bird remarked, “a new priest should not be given as a gift a golden chalice, they should be given a bowl and a towel to wash people's feet”.

Australian and New Zealand Redemptorists could never have imagined that the Holy Spirit would have revealed God to their community in this way. As Provincial, Edmond Nixon mentioned in his closing statements, “if you were to write their story as a novel, you would be told it was to exaggerated, it could not have happened like that. But it did.”

These ordinations marked a list of firsts for the Province of Oceania, Doan Nguyen, who came to Australia as a refugee at age eight, was the first Australian ordained in the Province in 14 years. Mark Chia was the first Singaporean ordained in the Province of Oceania. Vinsensius and Timo were the first Indonesians ordained in the Province, and in a great line of grace, Son Nguyen is the eighth ordained to the Province of Oceania from Vietnam.

We wish all the ordained the very best as they embark on their faith journey to preach and share the Gospel and message of God’s abundant Love and Mercy.
