Redemptorist receives Australia Day honour

Bishop Peter Stasiuk, C.Ss.R. was honoured this Australia Day with entry into the Order of Australia. He received the honour for his service to religion and to the community as bishop of the Ukrainian Catholics of Australia, New Zealand and Oceania and through his contributions to Catholic welfare, counselling and development programmes. The award was announced January 26, 2009 by the Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Her Excellency, Ms Quentin Bryce, AC.

Bishop Stasiuk was born in Roblin, Manitoba, Canada, in 1943, and professed as a Redemptorist on August 28, 1962. Over the following years he studied in Windsor, Canada; Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, USA; Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada; Ottawa, Canada; Kiev, Ukraine; and Tours, France. He made his final profession as a Redemptorist on August 28, 1965 in Yorkton, Canada. He was ordained deacon in Chicago, USA, and on July 2, 1967, ordained priest in Winnipeg, Canada,

From 1967 to 1974 Father Peter was associate pastor at Holy Redeemer Church in Roblin, Canada. During that time he was director of students at the seminary where he was also a professor. He went on to serve the people in Sacred Heart Parish of Ituna, Saskatchewan, Canada., 1975 to 1978. Father Peter then transferred to the church of the Holy Eucharist in Toronto, Canada, where he was also leader of the Redemptorist community till 1981. He returned to Roblin, and, covering many ministries and positions, remained there till he was ordained bishop in Winnipeg, Canada in March, 1993.

In May of that year the new bishop was installed in Melbourne - bishop of Ukrainian Catholics in Australia, New Zealand and Oceania. From Melbourne he continues to serve the community. It was for this contribution that now, on Australia Day, 2009, he has been awarded his AM. 

New Zealand and Australian Redemptorists join with the people of the Eparchy of Saints Peter and Paul in congratulating our confrere on the honour bestowed on him by an Australia that enjoys his presence and service.
