Advent 2009

December 16 – Wednesday of the third week in Advent

Today's thought

Ellie and Jade were shopping in their local supermarket. While making their way through the produce section they saw a man smelling the rock melons.  “Look at that,” Jade said, “that man is smelling all the melons. That’s disgusting”. “It’s certainly different,“ Ellie remarked.  Let’s go and ask him what he’s doing.

They approached the man, Jade fixing him in her suspicious stare. “What are you doing with those rock melons?” “Ah,” he said with a smile, “I’m just trying to pick the best one to take home.  See, you can tell when they are perfectly ripe for eating by their smell.”  “Fascinating,” Jade said walking off still disgusted.

Next time Ellie was in the produce section she smelled the melons in order to find the best one.

It was just then that Jesus cured many people of diseases and afflictions and of evil spirits, and gave the gift of sight to many who were blind. Then he gave the messengers their answer, ‘Go back and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind see again, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, the Good News is proclaimed to the poor…’
- Luke 7:21-22

Lord, when you see creation you rejoice in all you have made. May humanity too have eyes for creation’s beauty and gladdened hearts to enjoy it. Bring everyone to seek the better path, the way of forgiveness, justice and love. We ask you this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

My search is further.
There’s still to name and know
beyond the flowers I gather
that one that does not wither –
the truth from which they grow.
