Advent 2010

November 28 - First Sunday of Advent

Thought for today

Melissa and Pete could never have guessed the quality of the waiting their love would ask of them.  The birth of a baby boy rounded out their first two years of marriage and led to an untold joy filling their days and the occasional undisturbed night.

But for the proud parents that joy was quickly taken from them when SIDS struck down little Zach at barely five months. Pete and Melissa limped along for over a year until a second pregnancy, a second chance.  But that too was not to be. A miscarriage at twenty weeks left them both raw, and the long, lonely days that followed just amplified their shattered hearts.

A third pregnancy in 2005 fanned a whisk of fragile hope for Melissa and Pete.  Would they again be able to face the waiting?  Somehow they did, and the talkative curly-haired little girl at number 76 is witness to it. Yvette’s laughter, a soothing balm for family and friends, is enough too for her brothers, Tyler and Zach. Only Pete and Melissa know the quality of the waiting their love has asked of them.

In Advent 2010 a shattered world waits on heaven’s healing balm – Emmanuel, God with us.

Brothers and sisters: You know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed; the night is advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light.
- Romans 13:11-12

Gracious God, increase our strength of will for doing good that Christ may find an eager welcome at his coming and call us to his side in the kingdom of heaven, where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

Poetry Extract

Rain come down and give us new fresh water.
Plants coming up new ...
Yam, creeper all plants new.
Then we get fruit, honey and things to live.
